CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — Dennis Erb Jr. managed to hit his marks perfectly on Monday night, surviving a late caution flag and seven-lap sprint to the finish at Clarksville Speedway to notch his 22nd-career UMP DIRTcar Summernationals win.
After drawing the pole for the feature, Erb ran off to a four-second margin in the opening 33 laps, before Gordy Gundaker and outside-polesitter Tanner English got together in Turn 3, with English spinning and bringing out the caution flag.
Though that gave Billy Moyer a chance in the final circuits, the six-time Summernationals champion was forced to settle for second in the end, 1.139 seconds back of a dominant Erb.
Erb’s victory paid a $5,000 winner’s share, and he moved to within one win of Rick Aukland for the fifth spot on the series’ all-time win list.
He now has two wins and two runner-up finishes in the last five Summernationals starts.
Two-time defending Summernationals titlist Bobby Pierce was third, a career-best for the second-generation driver at Clarksville, followed by Ryan Unzicker and Shannon Babb.
Billy Moyer Jr., David Siebers, Gundaker, Brent Larson and English completed the top 10.
Pierce won a $2,000 bonus for topping the second weekly leg of the Summernationals points, but his overall points lead was trimmed to just 14 over the elder Moyer.
