WOODHULL, NY — official release — Audio by Paul Harkenrider — Susan Groover-Van Pelt & Dillon Groover Racing Photos — It was a very tough call for Woodhull Raceway Track Promoter Ted White, but at the end of the night, as rain ended around 5:30, and racing began right around 7 p.m., it was the right call as 68 total cars were registered in, 32 of them, being Big Block/Small Block Modifieds.
In the 9th annual Lyle Sherwood Memorial, Donnie Lawson, who has yet to win a feature in 2014, after being last year’s track champion, led the full field to the green before the first caution came out on lap one. The next 11 laps involved three more cautions where Lawson remained as the race leader. Billy Van Pelt, who started in the Sixth position stayed put for the first opening laps before finding something on the top side of the speedway, after the fourth restart on lap 11.
Van Pelt then made his way into the top five by lap 13 and in the runner up spot by lap 15. Then ironically on lap 17, the car number Lyle Sherwood chauffeured for so many years at the Woodhull Raceway, passed Lawson on turn two.
Despite many cautions that also occurred throughout the second half of the race, Van Pelt was able to have great restarts and hold off Donnie Lawson, who finished in second, followed by Steve Hartman Jr, Mike Bowman, and Lee Bills.
“You know, I was talking to my car owner, Grant Hilfiger, at the beginning of the year, and I was hoping to win a lot of features this year, but if there was one feature I wanted to win, it would be this one, and I was happy to pass Lawson, “The Lyle way,” on the top side of the speedway. Donnie Lawson is such a great competitor, along with a lot of drivers here and I am happy to be here again for the sixth time” said Van Pelt in Instant Heat Wood Pellets Victory Lane.
In the Crate Sportsman, finally picking up his second feature win of the year was Dillon Groover of Beaver Dams, NY. Groover, who is only 15 years old started third took the lead on the very first lap. Not a single caution was thrown until lap 19, where Josh sawyer was sitting in second. Sawyer was unable to pass Groover, and Groover picked up the win after being so close so many times. Sawyer came home in second, followed by Jake Dgien, Cory Costa and Kenny Peoples Jr who was piloting the Zack Carey 2z in the 25 lap sportsman event.
It was a family Sweep as Van Pelt picked up the win in the Modified event, and Dillon Groover, who is the nephew of Billy Van Pelt, was the Crate Sportsman winner.

Brett Marlatt was able to come home with the Street Stock win. It is Marlatt’s 8th win in 2014 and he is going to prepare to defend his Joe Willcox Open trophy which comes up in a couple weeks. Gene Balmer came home in second, followed by Rich Sharpsteen, Bob Buono, and Brett Parsons.
In the Front Wheel Drives, Ryan Austin also returned back to victory lane for the first time in a few weeks as he battled it out with teammate Adam Delgrosso. Delgrosso and Austin were side by side the remaining six laps, but on the last turn, it was Austin with the slight edge on Delgrosso.
“Every week, I have more and more fun running with Adam (Delgrosso) and Joe (Birdsall), and this whole year has been a blast, after last year only racing eight times before, and this being my first full year, having six feature wins, leading the points for a while, it has just been fun!” Said Austin in victory lane.
James Kreidler lapped all but one car and picked up his first win in 2014 in the Mini Stocks division. Rick Amidon finished in second, followed by Brian Grant, Derek Puryear, and Chris Hand.
The Woodhull Raceway will be OFF this coming Saturday, September 13th, as the track gears up for the 50 lap ISKY Cams Championship for the BRP Can Am 360 Late Model Series. There will also be a 50 lap $750 to win Street Stock open race. Crate Sportsman, Mini Stocks and Front Wheel Drives will complete the program. All presented by B&W Towing, and River Front Collision.
